Japan Summer Festivals 2026：Gion Matsuri in Kyoto - A Must-See Procession of Floats

Gion Matsuri was originally prayed for the blessing of the gods to eliminate disasters.

Gion Matsuri, with over 1,100 years of history, dates back to 869 AD when a severe epidemic broke out in Kyoto. A grand festival was held at Gion Shrine to pray for divine protection and dispel calamities, marking the origins of the Gion Matsuri. This month-long festival is divided into two parts: the welcoming of the gods during the "Saki Matsuri" (before procession) and the returning of the gods during the "Ato Matsuri" (after procession). The highlight is the "Yamahoko Junko" on July 17, where massive floats, some as tall as 5-8 stories and weighing several tons, are pulled through the streets by hand. Tourists from all over the world gather to witness Kyoto’s grandest annual festival.

UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage: Gion Matsuri Yamahoko Procession

Each float represents a different district of Kyoto and tells different story. Premium viewing seats are available at the Kawaramachi-Oike intersection.

Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri, alongside Osaka’s Tenjin Matsuri and Tokyo’s Kanda Matsuri, is known as one of the "Three Great Festivals of Japan." Both the Saki Matsuri and Ato Matsuri feature grand "Yamahoko Junko" float processions. On July 17, the Saki Matsuri procession sees 23 floats parading through the streets, while the Ato Matsuri procession on July 24 features around 12 floats. This stunning procession has been recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The highlight of the festival is the "Yamahoko Junko" on July 17. The floats are divided into two types: “Yama” and “Hoko”. The Hoko floats are particularly impressive, standing as tall as 25 meters and weighing up to 12 tons. Both types of floats are intricately decorated with fine crafts, including textiles, dyed fabrics, and sculptures. Due to their exquisite beauty, the floats are sometimes referred to as "moving museums."

For the Saki Matsuri, premium seats are available at the Kawaramachi-Oike intersection, offering a prime view of the floats making sharp 90-degree turns.

The Naginata Hoko, which always leads the parade, carries a long spear symbolizing the warding off of evil and disease. A specially chosen messenger of God sits atop the Naginata Hoko, the only one to be a real person acting as a "child", while other floats use dolls for this role.

The order of the floats is determined by lottery each year (except for Naginata Hoko and Kanko Hoko). Each float represents a different district in Kyoto and has its own story. For example, the first float, Naginata Hoko, features a long spear symbolizing the warding off of evil and disease. It also carries the only "chigo" (a sacred child) portrayed by a real person, whereas other floats use dolls instead. Kanko Hoko, always fifth in line, draws its theme from the Chinese story of Lord Meng Chang and the "Chicken Crowing and Dog Thief" tale, featuring many chicken motifs.

Three Days of Festivities: Yoiyama Lights Up Kyoto Nights

During “Yoiyama”, some of the floats are illuminated and open to the public for paid viewing. During “Yoiyama”, the streets of Kawaramachi are closed, food stalls line on the streets, creating a festive carnival-like atmosphere. The floats are illuminated during the “Yoiyama” celebration (July 14-16). Each float is accompanied by a lucky charm called “Chimaki”, residents of Kyoto hang outside their homes for peace and safety.

During the festival, other events like Yoiyama, Hanagasa Junko ,and Gion Bayashi take place. In the three days leading up to the Yamahoko Junko (July 14-16 and July 21-23), an evening celebration called “Yoiyama” is held. During this time, the floats are illuminated and parked around various locations in Kyoto. The streets of Kawaramachi are closed off, and food stalls line the area, creating a lively festival atmosphere where visitors can admire the floats and collect stamps.

Thousands of visitors flood the streets, turning the typically quiet Kyoto into a bustling celebration during the festival !
