Legend has it that during the Tang Dynasty, the Japanese monk Huizang obtained a Guanyin statue from Wutai Mountain with the intention of taking it back to his homeland. However, a storm hit the boat passing by Mount Putuo, and an iron lotus flower emerged around the vessel, hindering progress. It was believed that the Bodhisattva did not wish to travel eastward and left the statue on the mountain. Witnessing this phenomenon at sea, the Zhang family dedicated their residence for worship, leading to the name "Bukenqu Guanyin Temple." This marks the genesis of Mount Putuo's Buddhist culture, officially establishing it as Guanyin's manifestation site.
