Taipei Dining Guide: The Four Most Popular Soy Milk and Fried Bread Stick Shops for Breakfast

1. Ding Yuan Soy Milk(鼎元豆漿) - Excellent Soup Dumplings, but the handmade pastries are the stars
This shop attracts many Japanese tourists who come for the signature soup dumplings, which are thin-skinned and juicy without being greasy. They can be enjoyed without dipping sauce and are definitely above average. However, the dumpling skins are a bit softer compared to those from Din Tai Fung.
My favorite items are the various handmade pastries, including sesame flat bun, peanut pastries, black sesame pastries, honey pastries, and crab shell pastries—each one gets better the more you chew. For example, the peanut pastry has a crispy outer layer and a soft, slightly melted peanut filling, making a delightful crunch with every bite. Highly recommended!

2. Qingdao Soy Milk(青島豆漿店) - Rare traditional oven-roasted sesame flat bun, juicy meat bun
In 21st century, it’s surprising to find traditional oven-roasted bun and meat bun in a big city! You must visit Qingdao Soy Milk Shop if you get the chance. Currently, there are no dine-in seats, only takeout. If you’re staying near the MRT "Dongmen" station and your hotel doesn't provide breakfast, this is a must-visit. Their buns are handmade and roasted over a traditional fire, giving each piece a unique warmth and care.

There was only three waiters in the store. The sitting old lady was in charge of taking care of the meat buns and chive buns that are baked on the stove. She will observe and adjust at any time to ensure that each bun was baked to the best effect. While the old lady was watching over the fire, she would tear open the hot bun crust and eat it in small bites. She looked very cute. Another gentleman was busy rolling dough, frying pancakes, etc., and there was another stove next to him baking sesame flat bun. There was another person who was in charge of taking orders and checking out, and was very busy. Because they were baked manually, the colors of the baked meat buns, chive buns and sesame flat buns was uneven, which was very unique!
The most famous dish is the meat bun, which is filled with pork and chopped green onions. Because the bun crust is dry-fried, it does not taste greasy. The sesame flat bun is also very good, so crispy that it almost crumbled and still tasted good after being left for several hours.

3. Miss Qin’s Soy Milk(秦小姐豆漿店) - My No. 1 in Taipei! Must-Try snake bean egg pancakes and braised pork balls
If you search for "Miss Qin" on Google Maps, you might find three locations. It’s said that they were originally opened by the famous artist Qin Feifei, but later split into different management, each with its unique flavors. I’ve tried all three and recommend the one on Yanji Street for the most delicate taste. It’s my go-to breakfast spot every week!

The standout items are the unique braised pork balls cake and snake bean egg pancakes, which I haven’t found anywhere else. The correct pronunciation of snake bean in Mandarin is "jiang," but if you can’t say it, just ask for "that bean pancake." The snake beans are pickled and chopped, mixed with the pancake, giving a light soy sauce, sugar, and vinegar flavor that’s very appetizing. "Miss Qin" also puts a lot of thought into the sauce and provides homemade fried sauce. It has a very distinctive taste of shredded dried tofu and garlic in your mouth.

The braised pork balls bread is a sesame bread wrapped with three and scallion eggs. It has a chewy texture. The sesame bread here has a flavor of white pepper and salt, which is very different. I personally rate Miss Qin as the best in Taipei City, even better than the famous Fuhang Soy Milk! I have tried almost every dish and none of them was disappointing. You are welcome to come and judge for yourself. Although it is open until the afternoon, many items are usually sold out after 11 o'clock, so it is recommended not to arrive too late.

Miss Qin’s Soy Milk
Address: No 7-6, Yanji Street, Songshan District, Taipei City
Opening Hours: 5:30am - 1:30pm

4. Tseng Family Soy Milk(曾家豆漿) - Recently Gained Popularity as an Egg Tart Shop

Tseng Family Soy Milk has been in business for decades, but it gained fame recently because of its Portuguese egg tarts, attracting long lines of customers. The queue moves quickly, and you can usually buy your food in about 15-20 minutes. Currently, there’s a limit of two egg tarts per person, and dine-in is not available—only takeout.

Their egg tarts are beautifully puffy, with layers of pastry that look appetizing. The filling has a rich milky flavor that isn’t too sweet, providing a perfect balance of crispy crust and smooth filling that you can easily finish in one go. It’s recommended to pair the egg tart with plain soy milk (without sugar) to enhance the flavor of the soybean.
Tseng Family Soy Milk's egg pancakes and buns are above average, but nothing special. After all, there are too many late-night snacks in Taipei. I think you can pass them up and just take away the egg tarts and soy milk.

Each Taiwanese breakfast spot has its unique charm: Ding Yuan’s signature soup dumplings and pastries, Qingdao’s oven-roasted meat buns, Miss Qin’s snake bean egg pancakes and Tseng Family’s Portuguese egg tarts. Which one would you like to try? All four are conveniently located near MRT stations in downtown Taipei—plan your visit now!
