Taipei's Hushan Trail: A Forest Escape in the Heart of Xinyi Discovering Nature Amidst the Urban Jungle

Hushan Circular Trail: Connecting Streams and Forests

Taipei is surrounded by mountains, and Hushan Trail (also known as Hushan Circular Trail) is a popular spot for locals and families seeking a relaxing getaway. This trail is composed of several paths: the Hushan Stream Trail (or Family Trail), the Hushan Nature Trail, and the Hushan Ecology Trail. Upon my first visit, I found the signage clear, guiding me along the entire route and even to the nearby Four Beasts Mountain Trail (Nangang) at an elevation of 375 meters.

At 140 meters high, Hushan is one of the Four Beasts Mountains (along with Xiangshan, Baoshan, and Shishan). The trailheads are easily accessible, and I chose to take the MRT to Houshanpi Station, exiting at Exit 2. After a 15-minute walk to Songshan Cihui Temple, I found the starting point of the trail marked by a red sign reading "Four Beasts Mountain Citizen Forest."

There are two routes to choose from at the trailhead. The right route follows the banks of Hushan Creek and is a gentle path, also known as the family trail. The left route is the Hushan Nature Trail, which ascends the hill behind Songshan Cihui Temple and has more stairs and uphill sections. The two routes form a loop, connecting the creek and the forest.

A Dreamlike Experience: Ancient Bridges and Scenic Views

Which trail is more enjoyable? I recommend starting with the Family Trail on the right. Here, charming, old-fashioned bridges and the flowing Hushan Stream create a picturesque scene. The gentle sound of the stream, flanked by vibrant ferns and lush trees, forms a green canopy overhead, resembling a fairyland and making it a popular spot for photos.

Continuing along the trail leads to a waterside plaza—an ideal spot for summer fun and family picnics. However, be prepared for mosquitoes; it’s wise to take preventive measures.

The Hushan Stream, once at risk due to coal mining debris and severe soil erosion, has been restored by the Taipei City Government, reviving its natural ecosystem. In late spring, fireflies can be spotted here, including the indigenous black-winged firefly and the successful breeding of the yellow-edged firefly’s larvae.

Continuing up the Family Trail, you'll encounter plenty of shade and scenic spots like the Four Beasts Pavilion and Fuxing Garden, which offer excellent views of Taipei 101 and the surrounding basin. To add some adventure, I took the path from Fuxing Garden to Jiuwu Peak, the highest point of Thumb Mountain at 375 meters. The peak features a prominently painted red sign, making it a fantastic lookout point. From here, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of Taipei and the surrounding mountains.

The stone pillars in the Four Beasts Square serve as directional indicators for Hushan, Xiangshan, Baoshan, and Shishan. The trail is lined with dead trees, which serve as places for animals to mate, rest, and seek refuge. Fuxing Garden is the highest point of the Hushan Trail. Jiuwu Peak offer excellent views of Taipei 101 and the surrounding basin.

From Jiuwu Peak, one can enjoy a panoramic view of Taipei City, with the distant Guandu and Keelung Rivers faintly visible.

To descend before the rain began, I opted for the Hushan Nature Trail, completing the circular route back to the starting point. This section is primarily composed of well-maintained stone steps, making for an easy descent. The rich biodiversity here includes various wildlife and bird species. Near the end of the trail, I was thrilled to unexpectedly spot a group of lovely Formosan Blue Magpies foraging for grasshoppers in the trees. Their long tails and playful movements captivated me, prompting me to take photos. After a quick Google search, I discovered these birds are revered in Taiwan and have been informally declared the "national bird."

In recent years, the Formosan Blue Magpie has gained popularity due to its online recognition, leading to increased hunting and habitat encroachment by invasive species, raising conservation concerns. Spotting one during my exploration was the perfect ending to my forest adventure. Next time you visit Taipei, consider immersing yourself in this natural wonder!
