The Tamsui Tenyuan Temple （淡水天元宮） blooms with three colored cherry blossoms from late January to March every year, while around the Temple of Heaven, there are Yoshino cherry blossoms blooming in relay from March to April. The most unique thing is that most cherry blossoms are of a single variety, but what's special here at Tianyuan Temple is the three color cherry blossoms with white, pink, and dark red variations. Decades ago, temple volunteers used Taiwan's native mountain cherry blossoms as the base and added Japanese Yoshino cherry blossoms, allowing the flowers to have both the resilience of mountain cherry blossoms to adapt to the humid climate of the Datun Mountain area and the distinct pink and white beauty of Yoshino cherry blossoms.

Architecture and cherry blossoms interweave Temple of Heaven becomes the visual core

Tamsui Tianyuan Temple is located on the northwest slope of the Datun Mountain Range. The climate here is cool and humid, with acidic soil from volcanic geology. In addition, the mountains are often shrouded in thick fog in late winter and early spring, which is the perfect environment for cherry blossoms. Tianyuan Temple is divided into two buildings, front and rear. The front building is a traditional Taiwanese-style temple, while the rear building is the "Wuji Zhenyuan Temple" （無極真元天壇） which is 200 feet tall and designed in the style of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing. The composition of this circular five-story building and the surrounding cherry blossom forest has become a popular symbol of spring in northern Taiwan and is sold online.

The key to shooting cherry blossoms at the Wuji Tianyuan Temple is not the abundance of flowers, but how to utilize the terrain and architecture. Due to the circular structure of the Temple of Heaven, one can stand on the stairs below and shoot upwards. Using cherry blossoms as the foreground and the Temple of Heaven as the main subject will create a more layered image; Or walk to the circular platform and take pictures of the crowd and the interweaving of flowers and trees from a high place, which can also present a lively atmosphere.

In addition, the large crowds here allow you to "use people in the frame": using tourists as proportions makes the scene more authentic. For cleaner shots, it's recommended to shoot in the morning or evening, or use tree branches for close-up shots to avoid the crowds. Towards the end of the flower season, the fallen petals on the ground are also a highlight. Try shooting from a low angle to include the fallen petals along with the steps and buildings in the frame, creating a softer atmosphere different from when the flowers are in full bloom.

Using cherry blossoms as a foreground, capture a layered image of the Temple of Heaven. In the temple courtyard, believers relax and chat. Visitors can rest in the pavilion, where free tea is also served.

However, this beautiful cherry blossom grove attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year, and it gets extremely crowded during the blooming season. The path to the Temple of Heaven is uphill, requiring a 5-10 minute walk. It is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes and be considerate of others, "watching but not touching," and absolutely refrain from pulling on branches for photos, so that the cherry blossoms can grow healthily. Visiting on a weekday is the best option to avoid the crowds.

After cherry blossom viewing The local markets offer more charm

At the end of Yingzhuan Road is Tamsui MRT Station.

Besides cherry blossom viewing at Tianyuan Temple, don't just go to Tamsui Old Street after returning to Tamsui City. After the bus goes down the mountain and before entering the final stop of the Tamsui MRT, you can get off at Zhongshan Market Station two stops in advance. This place connects Qingshui Street and Yingzhuan Road and is the heart of Tamsui's local life, from the morning market to the night market.

The traditional Taiwanese food flavor aroma wafts from the storefront. The menu at the entrance showcases a wide variety of traditional snacks.

The author highly recommends "Fanxiang Taiwanese Snacks" （范香台灣小吃） a restaurant on Qingshui Street that has been operating for decades. Its signature dish is the simple yet soulful Taiwanese pork ribs rice, known as "one of the strongest crispy pork ribs in Tamsui." The hearty pork ribs forgo heavy breading, instead being marinated in a secret sauce and deep-fried to perfection, paired with three customizable side dishes. The savory flavors blend seamlessly, delivering a rich and satisfying taste of authentic Taiwanese cuisine.

The fried food at "Shunshimai" （順市買） is also incredibly satisfying. There are several fried chicken shops in the row, but this one is particularly popular. The owner will "reheat" the chicken after the customer orders to make it crispier, using high oil temperature to force out excess oil, making the chicken leg skin even crispier while the inside still retains its rich chicken juices and isn't dry. The steaming hot Taiwanese-style sweet potato fries with plum powder are also a must-order; I always make a special trip here to satisfy my cravings whenever I'm in Tamsui.

Suggested itinerary for a one-day cherry blossom viewing tour in Tamsui

※ Morning: Take the MRT to Danshui Station, then transfer to Bus No.866 which leaves at 8:55 or Bus No.875 which leaves at 9:30. It takes 15 minutes to get to Tianyuan Temple directly.

※ Noon: Take the bus back to Danshui City and get off at Zhongshan Market Station. Visit the morning market in Zhongshan market and cross the street to Qingshui Street and Yingzhuan Road.

※ Afternoon to evening: Within a 10 minute walk, you can stroll along the banks of the Tamsui River and enjoy the sunset at Tamsui Old Street.

※ Evening: Take the MRT from Tamsui Station and return to downtown Taipei. You will pass Jiantan Station along the way, and you can get off and visit Shilin Night Market.
