Not every attractive tourist city boasts natural advantages like mountains and rivers. Taipei's suburbs are vast and well-connected by public and commercial transport, with numerous developed attractions. While it once seemed stuck in the past, recent years have seen noticeable improvements. Well-known spots like Beitou and Yangmingshan, as well as less mainstream locations like Jinshan, have become more appealing. Among these, Wulai, nestled deep in the mountains, is gradually transforming into a more youthful and refined tourist destination, shedding its outdated image.

Hot Springs and Forest Baths

"Wulai," located in the southernmost part of New Taipei City, derives its name from the Atayal language, meaning "water is hot, be careful" (Kiluh-ulay). This name highlights its long-standing reputation as a hot spring destination. Among the local hot spring spots, "Fusen Banzhi Trio”( 馥森阪治 Trio ) stands out. Operated by the Taiwanese creative boutique hotel brand Fulan Duo, it features 16 independent hot spring rooms and a restaurant, maintaining the spirit of the land’s cultural icon, the indigenous singer Yulau Yugan, from whom the name "Banzhi" is derived. The "Trio" represents the three elements embraced here: music, cuisine, and hot springs.

Wulai is known as the "Beauty Spring," with its bicarbonate spring water having a pH of 7.0 to 7.4, making it a mildly alkaline and warm mineral spring. This water is known for cleansing the skin and promoting metabolism, providing a refreshing sensation. In Fusen Banzhi Trio's independent hot spring rooms, most bathtubs offer stunning mountain views. The windows are unobstructed by glass, allowing for direct contact with nature, enhancing the open-air hot spring experience and providing a refreshing cleanse for the body and mind. The hot spring rooms also offer health teas and snacks, with shower products made from natural tea seeds. After soaking, guests can stroll through the park. Although not large, it features a small performance and resting area, as well as a Japanese-style reading room where you can relax on tatami mats. The winding paths through the woods are charming, accompanied by soothing music—perfect for a little forest bathing. These two different bathing experiences cater to both physical and mental wellness.

Modern Cuisine Without Borders

The "INNORI" restaurant The dishes are inspired by indigenous culinary culture and feature delicious seasonal ingredients. Appetizers: enoki olives, river shrimp, and sausage withmountain pepper of Atayal. Main dishes: Black King Kong peanuts, sous-vide chicken drumsticks, and mountain pepper of Atayal. Main course: Red-skinned potatoes, stewed pork cheeks, rosemary.

After a stroll, it's time to eat. The "INNORI" restaurant here has its own concept of Trio: indigenous flavors, local ingredients, and healthy vegetarian dishes. The meals are beautifully crafted yet unpretentious, inspired by indigenous culinary culture using seasonal ingredients, creating simple and delightful dishes. The restaurant serves lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea in set menu formats with main course options. After dining, if time allows, you can join the free guided tours each afternoon, where staff share insights into Atayal history, culture, and religious beliefs, as well as the design concepts of the hot spring rooms and other facilities. The park also hosts regular artistic performances, including music and unique Turkish Sufi meditation rituals—"Sufi Whirling." These thoughtful arrangements break the stereotype that indigenous culture in Taiwan is limited to mountain dances and wild boar dishes. A half-day hot spring tour in Taiwan's mountains can be quite a cultured experience.
