Tsukiji Uogashi Market: Still Flourishing

Tsukiji Uogashi is an official building located just outside the old Tsukiji Market.

Although the original Tsukiji Market is now a name of the past, this treasure located near the city center of Ginza hasn’t lost its charm. On the contrary, the surrounding Tsukiji Outer Market has become more vibrant and diverse, now with the added feature of Tsukiji Uogashi Market.

Tsukiji Uogashi Market is made up of two three-story buildings, Odawarabashi Building and Kaikobashi Building, housing over 60 wholesalers who moved from the original Tsukiji Market. The market runs just like before, with early-morning transactions between 5:00 and 9:00 AM, after which it opens to the public. The most crowded spots are the stalls selling fresh seafood. If you're lucky, you might witness the spectacle of a full-size tuna (over five feet long) being sliced up. Watching the different knives used and the process of breaking down the tuna into countless portions is incredible. The moment that pink, appetizing fatty tuna is revealed, it leaves everyone in awe, and the entire crowd bursts into applause—a super hyper experience!

Besides sashimi, oysters are also a favorite for many. While you can no longer see the famous transport carts that used to zip around Tsukiji, you can try your luck with a gacha capsule toy instead. Apart from Tsukiji Uogashi, there are plenty of shops in the outer market for you to explore.
