Originally located in Asakusa, the temple was rebuilt on this site after a fire in 1679. The name "Tsukiji" actually comes from the land reclaimed for the temple. Unfortunately, the temple was again destroyed in the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake. The structure we see today was rebuilt in 1934 by architect Itō Chūta , who incorporated elements from ancient Asian Buddhist architecture, resulting in an exotic temple hall adorned with mythical creatures from Chinese legends. This unique building is designated as an important cultural property of Japan.
